Gov. Jeb Bush has declared a state of emergency for Florida counties reeling from wildfires. I noted in the news reports that a number of motor vehicle accidents have resulted from the reduced visibility caused by the smoke from the fires. Parts of State Road 80 and U.S. 27 in western Palm Beach County were closed Monday morning for three hours after smoke from brush fires burning in Broward County created foggy smoke over the roadways.
The low visibility caused four crashes that killed two people and injured 19 passengers on a bus, authorities said. Authorities blamed a five-vehicle collision in Volusia County early Sunday that killed two people on low visibility caused by smoke blending with fog. The liability for some of these accidents may also be hard to see through. Generally the driver who does not slow down and exercise extreme caution is mostly to blame, although I can imagine circumstances where the conditions come on suddenly and no one is to blame.
